Stage 1: Mechanical & Biological Filtration The process starts with a durable sponge that mechanically traps visible debris, fish waste, and uneaten food. Just as importantly, its porous structure provides the ideal surface for beneficial bacteria to grow, establishing a crucial biological filter that breaks down toxic ammonia and nitrite.
