Stage 1: Mechanical & Biological Filtration The cartridge's outer sponge layer provides robust mechanical filtration, trapping fish waste and debris. This sponge also functions as a biological hub, providing a vast surface for beneficial bacteria to colonize and naturally neutralize toxic ammonia and nitrite.
