DIY of filter
there is a great DIY project on youtube that shows how to create filtering system for the bottom of this inner canister. Basically you use a 6" slotted pot (pots used for growing plants in ponds) inverting the 6" pot and placing the fibrous filtering material underneath the pot to keep the cleaning material from being crushed by the microbial material placed above to keep the helpful bacteria in the water and for your plants. I have mine hooked up on a 50 gallon tank but it can be reconfigured down to a ten gallon. Happy plant growth

I have this filter and honestly, for a bit more I would get the eheim 2215. The reason is that the 2213 comes with a small plastic basket inside and, though the idea was good intentioned, it minimizes the volume of media you can hold. i also find that the water gets around the basket and doesn't flow through the basket, bypassing the media. the 2215 and 2217 don't have that basket and hold much more media. so spend more $ on those models instead.
