Humus-Rich Multimineral Nutrient Substrate for Freshwater Planted Tanks

Dennerle Deponit-Mix Black is a 10-in-1 multimineral nutrient soil for freshwater planted aquariums. It combines clay minerals, humus, soil bacteria, trace elements, and activator beads in one black substrate that supplies plant roots with essential nutrients for healthy, long-term growth, including sensitive species that don't thrive in inert gravel or sand. Its lifespan claims of at least 8 years set it apart, covering most planted tank setups without needing replacement or tank rebuilds. The clay and humus also regulate excess phosphate and nitrate, preventing algae growth and acting as a buffer. The white activator beads introduce beneficial microorganisms immediately, bypassing the maturation period typical of soil substrates. Its black color matches standard black aquarium gravel, creating a natural base layer for tanks using black gravel or sand.

Key Features:

  • Humus-rich multimineral nutrient soil for freshwater planted aquariums
  • At least 8 years of nutrient supply from a single installation
  • Clay minerals support healthy root structure and nutrient delivery to plant roots
  • Humus substances provide the organic nutrient base that sensitive plant species require
  • Active soil bacteria support the biological processes of the substrate bed
  • White activator beads deliver immediate microorganism activity from day one of installation
  • Regulates excess phosphate and nitrate in the water column to reduce algae pressure
  • Matched black color compatible with black gravel and black sand capping substrates
  • Contains all essential nutrients, minerals, and trace elements for aquatic plant growth
  • Suitable for sensitive plant species that require a nutrient-rich substrate to establish and thrive

Ideal For:

  • Planted tank hobbyists building a long-term freshwater aquascape who want a substrate that does not need to be replaced or significantly supplemented for the first eight or more years after installation
  • Aquascape builders using black gravel or black sand as their capping layer who need a nutrient base layer that matches the black color and does not disrupt the visual uniformity of the layout at the edges
  • Hobbyists keeping sensitive, demanding plant species — cryptocoryne varieties, Amazon swords, Echinodorus, or similarly root-feeding aquatic plants — that need an established, humus-rich substrate to grow at their full potential

Pro Tips:

  • Install Deponit-Mix as a base layer and cap with black gravel or sand. The nutrient soil is designed to sit below an inert capping layer — typically 2 to 5 cm of Deponit-Mix at the bottom, covered by 3 to 5 cm of black gravel or sand on top. The cap layer keeps the Deponit-Mix in place, prevents it from clouding the water, and creates the clean visual surface of the aquascape layout while the nutrient layer works below.
  • The white activator beads are intentional — do not remove them. When laying the substrate, the white beads are visually distinct against the black soil. They are the microorganism activator that Dennerle specifically designed into the substrate for faster biological establishment. Leave them in place; they will not be visible once capped with gravel.
  • Do not vacuum the Deponit-Mix layer during water changes. Siphoning into the nutrient substrate releases stored phosphate, nitrate, and organic compounds directly into the water column — exactly what the substrate is designed to buffer, not release. Limit maintenance siphoning to the capping layer only, and avoid disturbing the nutrient base beneath.
