Magnesium is present in NSW in a fairly high concentration (1300 - 1400 mg/L). Magnesium is an essential part of chlorophyll, which is necessary for photosynthesis.
Without photosynthesis plants, including algae and the corals, which we usually have in our aquariums, would not be able to live.
Magnesium has another important function since in fact makes maintaining the correct combination of calcium concentration and alkalinity or carbonate hardness possible.
Maintaining a correct magnesium concentration is therefore very important and is indirectly responsible for fast coral and calcareous algae growth by virtue of making the maintenance of correct calcium and alkalinity figures possible.

Magnesium is depleted by algae and is also depleted by the use of excessive kalkwasser and by going far beyond natural calcium and alkalinity and pH values.
The Salifert magnesium test is very straightforward and does not suffer from calcium and strontium interferences when within certain bounds.
It measures in sufficient accurate steps of 30 mg/L with a sharp color change.
The kit can perform approx. 50 measurements.

I have this test kit and I absolutely love it. It is soooo easy to test magnesium, it's actually kind of fun. What I like the most is that you don't have to compare colors as with other tests kits. The test kit works by changing colors from pink to blue. no shaking involved and very fast results, high recommend this!

Accurate, fast and easy
Salifert Magnesium test kit in my opinion is the best Magnesium test kit by far on the market today. This kit is straight forward as far as performing the test. Not only is it fast, but easy enough for the novice. Color change is obvious and the provided chart is simple to read. All I have to say is handle syringe carefully or markings might fade.

Good product
This is a good test kit - not too complicated and fairly straight forward. It seems to provide an accurate assessment of Magnesium. Having enough Mg in the tank helps cut down on unwanted algae. The price of this kit from Aqua Cave is about $8 less than at my local fish store. A good buy.

Great test kit. It is very easy and straight forward to use. The color change is also not hard to see (which is sometimes a challenge for me).

Excellent test kit!
This test kit is easy to use, and very accurate! Another great product from Salifert! I exclusively use their test kits for mine and my roommates tanks. With 700 gallons between our two systems, a product has to be excellent for us to be satisfied!

not much better
This is the first Mg test I have used, but I feel this is the best test you can buy for aquarium use after I did some research. Fairly easy to use after reading the directions a few times, and accurate.

Use of Magnesium test
While I have not compared this test to others, my biggest complaint with many tests involves my difficulty determining the "color change."<br>This tests color change seems easier for me to notice, thus lessening my frustration. The kit is easy to use. My only irritation is with the number of drops one must count before the desired range to be tested becomes within range. Overall though I liked this test and would recommend it.

Great test kit.
This is the only Magnesium test kit I will ever use. Its a bit pricey but very accurate and well worth the money.
