Every grain of Ocean Direct™ aquarium substrate is coated with bacteria and encapsulated by capillary action in a thin film of real ocean water. Very beautiful fine sand, can cloud water

Posted by STEPH on Aug 17th 2018

This took a while to settle (don't rinse! it comes with live bacteria and rinsing it is reducing the amount of helpful bacteria you get) but it is really nice to look at. It does create a powder that coats the glass initially but it goes away. I would use a bigger grain next time but it's okay for now.

Tends to be blown around by current

Posted by Reinaldo on Mar 13th 2016

I have used many different types of sand, from dry to live with different outcomes. While the sand is beautiful and very nice for sand sifting gobies, the grain size is very small and easily blown around. Works great in a low flow tanks and very easy on sifters. If you have or plan on having a lot of flow, I recommend a larger grain size.
